Tips To Paint Wooden Furniture

Painting wooden furniture can be a pleasant and satisfying experience, whether you're restoring a family relic or freshening a well-loved table. It's an excellent method to incorporate a new colour scheme or give a room a quick and easy makeover.

To create a smooth absorbent surface on previously painted or varnished furniture, gently sand it with medium grain sandpaper. Then wipe it down with a moist cloth and let the furniture to dry. If your furniture is uncoated, you can skip to step 4.

Top Tip:

If you're working on a large piece of furniture with flat surfaces, an electric sander may be more efficient for this phase. You will still need sandpaper for any difficult-to-reach regions.

Wiping the chair after sanding.

Wipe clean the furniture with degreaser and let it dry.

Sand it again with fine grain sandpaper, then remove any dust with a dry cloth, wipe it off with degreaser, and let it dry.

Top Tip:

If you are merely painting the legs of a piece of furniture, it may be easier to turn it upside down.

Apply a coat of wood priming with a small brush in the corners and a small roller on larger surfaces. Don't forget to stir your primer before using it!

Top Tip:

If you're using a brand new roller, simply spritz it with water to help it absorb more paint.

Apply two coats of satin finish paint to the top colour evenly to prevent runs and sags. For a professional finish, check the paint tin for drying periods between layers and lightly sand between each application.

Top Tip:

To avoid streaks, use brushes and rollers designed for painting wood.
